Interventions are only useful if schools can understand what they are trying to improve, how support will be delivered and how progress will be reviewed. In practice, that is easier said than done. Busy staff may record that support is happening, but the aim, baseline, success criteria or review evidence can be thin.

From intention to plan
A common intervention note might begin as something simple: “support reading fluency twice a week and review next half term”. That is a reasonable start, but it leaves important questions unanswered. What is the current barrier? What will staff actually do? What measure will show progress? What would count as a useful review outcome?

Interventions drift when nobody can easily see what should happen next. A structured intervention record helps staff know when to review, what evidence to collect and whether support should continue, change, escalate or close. AI assistance can support that by drafting clearer success criteria and review notes, but the decision remains with the school.
For a SENCO, this can reduce the time spent tidying records before reviews. For teaching assistants and intervention staff, it can make delivery expectations clearer. For leaders, it can make reports and dashboards more meaningful because records are more consistently completed.
What AI should not do
AI should not decide whether an intervention is appropriate for a pupil, whether it has worked, or whether a plan should be escalated. Those judgements belong to staff, using evidence, context and school procedure. The right role for AI is to help staff express and structure their work so it is easier to review.
Used carefully, AI can make intervention records less of an administrative afterthought and more of a useful evidence trail for pupils, families and staff.
