Safeguarding is one of the clearest examples of where AI must be handled carefully. A safeguarding record is not a place for speculation, dramatic wording or automated conclusions. It is a factual record that supports the school’s safeguarding procedure and the judgement of authorised staff.
That does not mean AI has no role. It means the role must be narrow, controlled and transparent. Where AI can help is with drafting clear, factual language. Staff may enter rough notes after a disclosure, concern or follow-up conversation. The assistant can help separate what was observed from what was reported, remove unsupported phrasing and produce a calmer first draft for staff to review.
Why factual language matters
Safeguarding records may be read by different authorised people over time. A DSL, deputy DSL, senior leader or external professional may need to understand the record quickly. Vague or emotive wording can make that harder. Factual wording helps preserve the distinction between evidence, professional concern and subsequent decision-making.
AI-assisted drafting can support that discipline if it is designed around safeguarding practice. It should not infer facts that are not in the prompt. It should not make allegations sound more certain than the staff account supports. It should not copy sensitive safeguarding content into general notes or letters.
SEND and vulnerability context
Some safeguarding concerns intersect with SEND, attendance, behaviour, communication, emotional regulation or vulnerability. The assistant can help staff consider those links where the prompt supports them, for example by helping to describe communication changes, attendance patterns or emotional presentation. But it should still avoid unsupported assumptions.
For schools, this helps keep the record useful without turning AI into a hidden decision layer. Staff remain responsible for the concern, the escalation route and the final saved wording.
Security and access still matter
