THE BRIEF
The client required a bespoke software solution to produce 250,000 tickets for the Wimbledon Tennis Finals in 25 different formats. Each ticket needed to contain unique variable data, including court, row, seat and day of play, together with an individual barcode. The process also needed to support batch production, print-quality verification, ticket compilation into books, packing, dispatch tracking and rapid reprints where errors occurred.
Introduction
Producing event tickets at this scale is not simply a print exercise. It requires the controlled handling of large volumes of data, the accurate generation of multiple ticket layouts, and a robust validation process to prevent costly errors.
Axisware developed a tailored ticket production and verification system to manage the complete workflow, from raw data import through to print, quality control, reprint management and dispatch preparation. The result was a streamlined and auditable solution built to meet the demands of a globally recognised event.
Solution
Axisware approached the project in carefully planned stages, starting with a detailed consultancy phase to fully understand the complexity of the client’s requirements. From there, we designed a dedicated Microsoft SQL database environment and developed the algorithms needed to import and transform raw ticketing data into a structured, production-ready format. The data was processed in a single pass to reduce the risk of data corruption and to maintain integrity throughout the workflow.
Once the data layer was in place, we created a variable-data printing system that allowed production staff to select ticket batches and send them directly to digital press without manual intervention. The solution merged database content with ticket templates containing built-in logic, ensuring the correct format was generated automatically for each ticket type. The system also supported book printing and automatic imposition, reducing manual effort and improving consistency.
To maintain print accuracy and barcode reliability, we also developed a Windows-based verification application. This displayed the printed ticket image on screen so operators could validate each ticket against the database record. Verification activity was logged with user credentials, dates and times to provide a full audit trail. Where verification failed, the system automatically initiated a reprint and restarted the relevant workflow, helping to minimise disruption while preserving quality standards.
Benefits
- Automated the production of 250,000 event tickets across 25 formats.
- Improved ticket accuracy through structured data transformation and database-driven generation.
- Reduced manual handling with direct-to-press variable-data printing workflows.
- Strengthened quality assurance through barcode validation and operator-led verification.
- Created a full audit trail for verification, reporting and accountability.
- Minimized production delays with automated reprint handling for failed tickets.
- Supported downstream fulfilment with ticket book compilation, packing and dispatch tracking.
Conclusion
Axisware delivered a bespoke ticket production and verification system that combined data processing, variable-data printing and quality control into one cohesive workflow. Built for scale and precision, the solution helped the client manage a complex fulfilment operation with confidence, while reducing risk and improving operational control. The original project page also includes a client testimonial stating that the system was still in operation seven years later, which suggests strong long-term value and reliability.
